JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: Invasive Plants Project Assistant / Field Technician

Application Period: Open until filled

Position Responsibilities:
1. Public outreach and invasive species education.

2. Plan and implement invasive plant treatment projects (including use of herbicides).

3. Assist with formation of Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA). Conduct and/or assist with public meetings and correspond with partners.
4. Assist with mapping of invasive plants using scientific research methods.
5. Enter surveyed data into ArcGIS database

6. Duties may also include working on other District projects concerning land and water management issues such as erosion control, water quality, and agriculture.

Required Qualifications:
1. Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and presentations to adults and children.
2. Self-starter, able to recognize opportunity and take initiative to organize others.
3. Basic knowledge of invasive plants and noxious weed issues and an interest in invasive plant management in Alaska.
4. Botany or plant identification skills, ability to identify native and non-native Kodiak species.

5. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with groups and individuals from a wide range of backgrounds.
6. Computer literate, and familiar with Microsoft Office applications.
7. Ability to hike several miles over rough terrain with a 20lb backpack and willing to work in inclement weather conditions.
8. Valid Alaska Driver’s license, reliable vehicle, flexible schedule, and a willingness to travel.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. An undergraduate degree in the natural sciences or equivalent experience with a degree outside of the natural resource disciplines.
2. Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management techniques.
4. Experience with ATVs.
5. Alaska Pesticide Applicators Certification or experience with herbicide use.

Salary Range/Benefits as an employee of AACD:
$12.00 - $18.00 hourly rate depending on experience, Part-time with schedule flexible dependent on weather and project partners.

 Position Duration: As funding allows (Grant dependent).
